Muslim Girl's Hijab Ripped off by Police at Immigrant Rights Protest

CAIR-Chicago is urging everyone to respond to an egregious case of police misconduct against Rehana Khan, a Muslim girl who had her headscarf (hijab) ripped off after she and several others were arrested for civil disobedience while protesting at a rally for immigrant rights. As she was led to a squad car, Ms. Khan informed an officer that the way in which she was being handled was causing extreme pain - actions from which she obtained bruises and scars - and requested that the officer ease her grip. The officer responded by stating: ?No, that?s what you get,? and then remarked, ?Take that off? and violently pulled off her hijab.

At the police station, Ms. Khan was made to take off her hijab again and was searched by a female and male officer without her hijab on. After the search, the female officer tried to give the hijab back to her but the male officer stopped her, stating something along the lines of there not being anybody at the station to look at her and indicated that the practice of wearing the hijab was a ?fashion statement.? Ms. Khan was then kept in lock up without being permitted to wear her hijab.

CAIR-Chicago will be meeting with representatives of the village of Arlington Heights to discuss the matter in upcoming days. Additionally, a trial to determine the fate of Ms. Khan, the other protesters, and the rights of protesters engaging in civil disobedience in the future is coming close.

ACTION REQUESTED:
Letters must be sent to the police chief of Arlington Heights as soon as possible demanding that the village drop the charges against the protesters and address the misconduct of the police officers who violated Ms. Khan?s civil rights. IAW is one of our biggest events of the year as an organization, so we urge you to help out in any way shape or form. If you signed up to volunteer, please come to your scheduled times and don't skip. Wear your IAW Shirts as much as possible this week, this will be our biggest way to publicize our events!! The more people that wear our shirts, the more publicity we can get for our events!!

IAW Shirts are still available. Contact any of the Shura members if you'd like to buy some. If you bought a green IAW Shirt, REMEMBER to pick up handbills from our booth in Java City so you can and them out. Wear your IAW Shirts as much as possible!

Islamic Relief Update

IR Aids Yemen Landslide Survivors
4 January 2006

Several houses in the village of al-Dhofair in eastern Yemen were crushed underneath a landslide on 29 December 2005.

Rescuers have recovered 65 bodies from the wreckage, including that of a young woman about to get married.

Eight people were pulled out alive from the rubble, but rescuers do not expect to find any more survivors. Government officials confirm that there are no bodies left, and rescue teams have left the area.

Between 140 and 200 people have been evacuated from the village because of the possibility of more landslides.

Landslides are rare in Yemen, but the country is prone to floods in spring and summer.

Islamic Relief’s Intervention

IR tents for survivors

Islamic Relief staff visited the site of the disaster within 24 hours. A rapid assessment was carried out and a meeting was convened with the Minister of the Interior to organise a coordinated response.

Islamic Relief intervened with aid for 150 families, both evacuees and those directly affected by the landslide.

Two truckloads of aid were distributed. IR staff distributed 15 tents, bags of sugar, flour, rice, oil, tea and milk. Blankets, pillows, and mattresses were also given out to survivors, and masks were provided for rescue workers digging up bodies from the rubble.

All the aid goods were purchased locally and distributed to survivors within two days of the landslide. IR was the first international aid agency to intervene.
